EAST DEVON GROUPS

RiO - Reuse: Furniture and household items. Recycling: various. Area covered: East Devon.
Recycling in Ottery (RiO) is a community reuse and recycling centre. We take recyclable materials (glass and paper) and offer a comprehensive range of reuse items, including furniture, PAT tested electrical items and appliances,  books, clothes, household goods and building salvage. Volunteers are welcomed, and can contribute to our consensus decision-making management meetings held every month.

We collect for free locally and deliver for around £5, charges vary for further a-field. Set up from an environmental perspective, RiO is now most appreciated for its social benefits. RiO provides training in repair and renovation. RiO is a not for profit company.

The RiO Grand grants scheme gives money to local community projects in need, that has been generated from the sales of donated reusable items. In 2006 and 2007, over 7 groups have received awards from RiO.

Otter Rotters Composting Project & Timber Reuse Project.
Garden waste collections to 9,000 households throughout Honiton, Ottery St Mary, Feniton, Whimple, Tipton St John & West Hill. Compost/mulches for sale.

Our group will compost about 400 tonnes of garden material in 2005-06, up from 260 tonnes in 2004-05. Kerbside collections are undertaken with a trailer using a pre-pay tag system to attach to bags, tags & bags available from local shops. Soft and woody material accepted. The group was formed at the end of 1999 following a Village Appraisal in Feniton. The appraisal indicated a lack of facilities and community involvement. A community composting scheme addressed both these issues. A Kitchen food waste collection scheme from households in the area will start in 2006. An anaerobic digester will be used to produce usable compost.
